Alicia is all keyed up for Dubai    ·    May 31st, 2004

Alicia Keys, winner of five Grammy Awards including Song of The Year Fallin, Best R&B Album Songs in a Minor and Best New Artist for her debut album, will be playing live in Dubai on May 28 at Dubai Media City. The singer is quite excited about her trip and “riding a camel in Dubai” remains on top of her wish list. City Times spoke to the singer in an exclusive interview

Alicia, it’s your first performance in the Middle East, how do you feel?

I am very excited about doing my first show in the Middle East. It is still amazing to me that music can travel through so many oceans and lives and bring me to Dubai. It is going to be an amazing show. I can feel it.

Honestly, is there some degree of apprehension coming to this part of the world?

Of course there are concerns on what part of the world we go to, with all the things that are going on in the world.

But I want to be able to experience as many sides of the world as I can.

What images/emotions does Dubai conjure up for you?

The images and emotions that Dubai conjures up in my mind are heat, sand, camels, history and hidden secrets of the world. But now I will be able to see with my own eyes and not just with my mind.

Is there anything you especially want to see/do while you’re here?

While I’m there I am definitely going to see the desert and ride a camel.

You’re going to be in the city for a week rehearsing for your European tour - was that a planned move?

Yes, being in the city for a week to also rehearse was definitely planned. It gives me an opportunity to take in new surroundings and let the inspiration soar.

How do you feel the Dubai crowd will react to you?

I know that the Dubai crowd will absolutely love the show. It is all about music and the passion of life that creates it. My show has something for everyone and I plan for everyone to have a ball! That’s a promise!

You’re going to do some covers - any one’s which stand out?

I do like to mix in some of my favourite covers in the show, one of them will definitely be Prince’s song, “How come you don’t call me,” but I can’t give away all of my secrets.

What do you feel gives your music the popularity that it has, especially in today’s ‘remixed’ environment?

I believe that what makes my music acceptable is that no matter where you’re from, where you grew up, or what you have experienced, there are certain things that all people understand: Love, pain, joy, hurt, and the search. These are the things that affect me and provoke me to write, and these are the things that I feel we, as people, understand. I hope that one of the reasons people can relate to my music is because it is honest and truthful. It is who I am.

You’re coming here with a band of 10. Is that normally the case and if so, are they always the same musicians?

Yes, I have played with the same band for years now. We have a chemistry. You will feel it.

You won 6 Grammy’s for ’songs in a minor’ and ‘the diary of Alicia Keys’ has been a big hit. How easy/difficult is it to ride on the ’success-wave’ of those two previous albums?

For me the success wave means that I can wake up every morning and feel the promise of another day. Feel happy and proud of the choices that I have made or feel confident that I have learned from my mistakes.

And if I can stay on that wave then to me, that is success.

How do you compare yourself to similar young musicians such as Norah Jones? Do you feel artists like you and her herald a new awakening in music, i.e. more emphasis on the artist as a ‘true’ musician and less on the artist as industry-driven product?

Yes, I am proud to think of women like Norah Jones and myself as artists who represent true musicianship, independence, the love of creativity and timelessness.

Alicia Keys To Play Biracial Piano Prodigy In First Movie    ·    May 22nd, 2004

Some people might wonder what Alicia Keys is doing at the Cannes Film Festival, let alone why she’s hosting a yacht party there. Turns out she’s there on business — according to her publicist, Keys is planning a foray into film.

Keys’ debut is slated to be the lead role in a biopic about biracial piano prodigy Philippa Schuyler, to be co-produced by Halle Berry. “She wanted to go [to Cannes], have her introduction to the film world, and say, ‘I’m here, I want to be part of Hollywood,’ ” Samantha Tillman, Keys’ publicist, said.

Her big-screen debut as Schuyler will be based on the 1995 biography “Composition in Black and White” by Kathryn Talalay, which details how the child prodigy’s musical career was clouded by her racial identity.

Born in 1931 to a black journalist and a white Texan heiress, Schuyler was a pianist at 4 and a composer by 5. She performed at Carnegie Hall when she was 13, leading people to dub her the “little Harlem genius” and compare her to Mozart. But unlike Mozart, Schuyler had mixed heritage, which caused her to be rejected by the classical elite in the United States. She tried to pass for Caucasian but was ultimately forced to find an audience abroad. The role won’t be much of a stretch for Keys, since she, too, is a classically trained pianist of biracial heritage.

Keys made the stop at Cannes on the way to Quincy Jones’ “We are the Future” charity concert in Rome on Sunday, her publicist said (see “Jay-Z, Norah Jones, LL Cool J On For Quincy Jones’ ‘We Are The Future’ “). The singer is also doing European promotion for her album to help set up a forthcoming tour. Word of her acting debut comes on the heels of news that she’s making forays into the literary world.

Berry, who owns the film rights to Schuyler’s story, will co-produce the still-untitled film with Marc Platt Productions (”Legally Blonde”).
