1. She adopted her signature braids at 13, when she discovered that it got her through humid New York City summers.

2. She features rappers as her love interests in her music videos: Common (”Like You’ll Never See Me Again”), Method Man (”If I Ain’t Got You”) and Mos Def (”You Don’t Know My Name”).

3. “I’m happy that I’m not super skinny,” Ms. Keys told Ebony in 2004. “Sometimes I’ve gotten photographs back, and people have literally shaven off pieces of me, and I tell them to put it back.”

4. While on the road, she carries “a cute pink bunny. It reminds me that not everything is so serious,” she told InStyle.

5. Bob Dylan mentions Ms. Keys in his song “Thunder on the Mountain”: “I was thinking about Alicia Keys/Couldn’t keep from crying/When she was born in Hell’s Kitchen, I was living down the line/I’m wondering where in the world Alicia Keys could be?”

I had to write you and tell you how EXCITED I am about this music and this album and how TOUCHED I am at how much you all have embraced it and loved it!

For this album to be NUMBER 1!!! is such a blessing! and I couldn’t have done it without you so I had to write and give you MAAAAADDDD love and respect for all of your support of me from day 1!

I’m sitting here right now, seasoning up some fish for thanksgiving.

As I Am debuted at #1 this week with an amazing 742,426 copies sold — impressive! Alicia beat Celine Dion and managed to sell more than double the amount Britney Spears sold a couple of weeks ago. Well deserved! As I Am is a really great album!

Congrats and well done, Alicia! =)

If it weren’t for her mother, Alicia Keys might have a radically different image. Keys, who has a new album titled “As I Am,” says that when she was trying to choose a professional name she went through a dictionary and stopped on the word “wild.”

She tells Newsweek in the magazine’s Nov. 19 issue that she asked her mother how Alicia Wild sounded to her.

“She said “It sounds like you’re a stripper,’” Keys said.

After that, she decided to use Keys.

“It’s like the piano keys. And it can open so many doors,” said the singer born Alicia Augello-Cook.
