Oh my goodness!!!!! Alicia Keys’ concert at GM Place in Vancouver was off the hook!! It was the greatest show! Our seats were in the first row of our section and when she would come over to our side, she was honestly like 10 feet away from us!!!!!! I can’t even describe the emotions that ran through me when I first saw her face. It was incredible! I still can’t even beleive I saw her in person!!!! Her voice is amazing! I have never heard a more powerful or more beautiful voice in my life. Thank you Alicia Keys for making this an unforgettable experience! Love you girl!!!!!!

10 Keys to Alicia Cont.    ·    August 15th, 2002

“A selection of quick and quirky facts about neo-soul singer and pianist, the divine Ms. Keys”
here’s an article I picked up while I was in Canada it’s from the Canadian Newspaper/Magazine, The Province

When Alicia Keys steps onto the stage at GM Place tonight everyone in attendance will be waiting for the same thing: “Fallin’.” The neo-soul singer’s breakout single became one of 2001’s signature songs and carried Keys’ debut album, Songs in A Minor, into the stratosphere. The album’s sales are more than 11 million copies-and-counting and the accolades showered down upon Keys range from Rolling Stone calling her the “Next Queen of Soul Music” to Newsweek proclaiming her ‘the Most Influential Entertainer of the Year” in 2001. Pretty impressive for a 21 year-old who came out of nowhere. But what do we really know about the woman who took home the Grammys for best new artist, song of the year, best female R&B vocal performance, best R&B song and fest [typo for best?] R&B album in 2002? Only that her name would’ve been Lauryn Hill in ’98. Will Keys’ career go the same way or is she the real thing? In preparation of her Vancouver debut, here’s 10 things you [maybe] didn’t know about the divine Ms. Keys:

10 Keys to Alicia    ·    August 15th, 2002

1. Born: Alicia Augello Cook, 1981, in the rough New York ‘hood of Hell’s Kitchen. Her mother Terri Augello is white, her father Craig Cook is black. She has a half-bro named Cole, age 11.
2. Keys says in her heart she feels black, citing experiences growing up leading her to identify with African-American culture.
3. She began piano lessons at age seven and attended the Professional Performing Arts High School. How Fame is that!
4. Credit Keys’ great vocal chops to voice coach Conrad Robinson of the Harlem Police Athletic League Community Centre on 124th Street. His brother Jeff has been Alicia’s manager for five years.
5. her first record deal was with Columbia records and rumored to be worth $400,000 US. Columbia didn’t hear any hits. Keys wasn’t interested in being another Backstreet Girl. They parted company. Somewhere, right now, a former Columbia exec dives for the “off” button every time keys comes on the radio, TV, Internet, etc.
6. Music biz legend Clive Davis bought out Keys’ contract and set her up at his new J Records label. Davis’ career bio was built on artists deemed “commercially nonviable.” A sampling of his signings: Bruce Springsteen, Janis Joplin, Puffy, and has-been guitarist named Santana.
7. Even with Davis’s clout and an aggressive marketing campaign, “Fallin’” couldn’t get on the radio. Davis circumvented the airwaves and secured Keys a spot on Oprah Winfrey’s TV show. The ploy worked. Requests for Songs in A Minor in the week it was released doubled.
8. Besides winning the five Grammys, Keys took home a Village Voice Music Award, two Billboard Awards, two American Music Awards, two NAACP Image Awards, three Soul Train awards, two World Music Awards, one ECHHO award. Then she turned 21.
9. recently, rumors surfaced about Keys’ sexual orientation. She told the London Sun: “Just ‘cause I don’t wear dresses? Give me a break. Every female has been called gay at one time. That’s just not who I am. I don’t have a problem with anyone who is. “The singer says she’s seeing a 27-year-old guy whose name she’s keeping to herself. Which doesn’t do much to dispel the rumors.
10. Keys founded the KrucialKeys production company with her writing partner Kerry “Krucial” Brothers. Her next CD is due out in mid-’03.
Bonus: She wears size 6 ½ shoes. [Canadian size I dunno US size?]

I went to the Concord, CA Alicia Keys concert and it was so hot. Donell Jones opened and was good but our girl Alicia ripped it. Never before have I been to a concert where the artist sounded just as good live as on the record. It was a night I will never forget. She talked and joked with the audience which made it feel really personal, almost like it was just you and her. I loved it.

Alicia Keys became the darling of the music world    ·    August 10th, 2002

The Oregonian
08/09/02
By Marty Hughley

With her arresting good looks and smart, eclectic updating of classic R&B, Alicia Keys became the darling of the music world in the past year, winning five Grammy Awards and gracing numerous magazine covers. Her Monday night show at the Rose Garden will be her first in Portland, though she does recall visiting the city to promote her album “Songs in A Minor” to radio stations. “I really loved it there — just the vibe of the city, and the people were so nice. So I’m definitely excited about coming back to play there.”

She spoke recently by cell phone from a Los Angeles department store.

Interviewer: A lot has been written about how accomplished you are for someone so young, but what’s most interesting is that your music seems to speak to 14-year-olds and 45-year-olds alike. Was that something you strived for?

AK: One of the things I said even before I had an album, back when I was scrabbling, getting my thing together, was that I wanted to reach everybody. People used to ask me, “Who is your audience?” And that used to irritate me. I always just wanted my music to reach anybody — the natural, normal, compassionate person. And now at my concerts it’s so wonderful because I look out and I can see the 60-year-old woman and the 4-year-old boy, and it’s like my dream come true.

Interviewer: How early did you start writing songs? And did you have to write lots of bad ones before you could get them to really capture your thoughts and feelings?

AK: I started dibble-dabbling when I was 12, started getting my flow when I was 13 or 14. It definitely is something you have to try and experiment with. A lot of those songs I wrote back then I might listen to now and think, “That’s terrible.” But that’s where I was at the that time and that’s what got me where I am now. So I don’t think anything is ever in vain.

Interviewer: As someone who started taking music seriously at a young age, have you had a long-term plan, or does your muse lead you?

AK: I’d have to say both. I have very long-range plans, in that we have a company, KrucialKeys Productions, that Kerry “Krucial” Brothers and I started, that I really see as a multimedia production company that can get involved in a lot of different things. I see myself scoring movies and even writing songs for the theater. There are all kinds of possibilities.

So, in some ways I’m led by God, or by my muse, as you say. And in other ways, I just try new things and then other things present themselves and I see that, “Hey, I can go in that direction, too.”

I saw Alicia Keys in Concert!    ·    August 10th, 2002

Hey fans! I had a great time at Alicia Key’s Summer Tour ‘02 concert in Sacramento, CA. Donell Jones opened for her. She looked stunning as usual, and blew me away. You KNOW an artist is good when they sound good live. We KNOW she’s got talent not just because of this but also ‘cauze she writes, produces and plays the piano….
Anyway, the concert was great. She sings and talks like she’s talkin’ just to you…(U know making everyone feel special) and she cracked some funny jokes and humor. Overall, it was probably the best concert I’ve been to yet. No matter if you spend $15-$100 for a seat at her concert, your experience will still be well worth the money! If you get the chance, try to make it to her Summer Tour! I got Alicia Keys fever…GO ALICIA!!
