IF you’re looking for a way to sum up Alicia Keys, the title of her latest single, Superwoman, says it all.

At just 27, the softly spoken R&B singer is an undisputed pop megastar who has won nine Grammys and sold more than 20 million albums worldwide.

And she’s just joined the ranks of Shirley Bassey, Nancy Sinatra, Tina Turner and Madonna by recording a James Bond theme song - the latest.

But the girl born Alicia Augello Cook in Harlem, New York, hasn’t always led such a charmed life.
Born to an Irish/Italian mother and Jamaican father (who split early in her childhood), Keys was raised in New York’s notorious Hell’s Kitchen - a cultural melting pot of Irish, Italian and Puerto Rican immigrants in Manhattan’s Midtown district where many known gangsters resided.

“My mother raised me and I saw her struggle and work and I’m not under any illusions _ I know exactly what I could go right back to,” she says down the line from Belgium, where she’s just come off stage after a concert. read more

The singer and actress, who co-stars in The Secret Life of Bees, hosted her fifth annual Black Ball Thursday, which benefits the AIDS organization Keep a Child Alive. And, as it turns out, she can be quite persuasive.

“I bat my eyes and I wink,” she said. “And we have great conversation, and they show up. It’s a very important event.”

Keys said she was optimistic about the country’s direction. “It’s a difficult time for all of us, but due to our recent election, it’s a hopeful time.”

Keys also sent her best wishes to singer Jennifer Hudson, who had been scheduled to perform at the event. Hudson’s mother, brother and nephew were killed last month.

“I have reached out to her,” Keys said. “We’re gathering around her and sending her love.” <!–more–>

Queen Latifah, Keys’ Bees co-star, was honored for her humanitarian work, as was Simon Fuller, the brains behind the Idol Gives Back juggernaut. Iman co-hosted the cocktail party, followed by a live auction, dinner and musical performances at the Hammerstein Ballroom.

Mayer, who wasn’t performing but was “hanging out,” raved about host Keys.

“She’s a rare human being. I’m proud to consider her a friend. I’m kind of a creep,” he joked. “It’s about supporting a friend, and it’s about myself feeling strong enough about it to help.”

A Gucci-clad Alba agreed. “What she’s done with this organization, the money and awareness she’s raised, is incredible. Becoming a mom makes everything more relevant. You feel the impact of every decision that’s made.”

Tyra Banks, in Michael Kors, was personally invited by Keys: She “called and asked me if I’d come and sit at her table. And I’m there.”

Top Chef’s Padma Lakshmi (in Naeem Khan), who has helped Keys raise money for Keep a Child Alive, said it can be tough asking for charity dollars. “It really is. I’m sending e-mails and calling. You felt almost bad because it was when the world was crumbling.”

International music labels and musicians are running after Indian musicians to cut albums with them, and we have none other than eleven-time Grammy Awards-winner Alicia Keys vouching for the fact.

“Indian music is all over now. Singers here (USA) and in Britain are clubbing with the Indian singers to cut an album with the feel of that soothing music. And yeah, people are liking this West-East collaboration,” Alicia told After Hrs in an interview.

Keys seem to have become fonder of Indian men, who according to her, have become ‘tougher’.

“Indian men are getting a tough image now. They are handsome, romantic. In recent days, I find them wearing a hard image too. They are very talented, actually. They can also dance well,” Alicia adds.

Alicia keys waited until the day after the election to share her thoughts she called into MTV trl on wednesday, she said ‘ i feel, like a renewal, i feel am excitement, i feel like everybody you meet in the street… all last night people were just honking horns… i just feel like this sense of wow!’. Keys watched the election result unfold with friends and ‘ just stared at the Tv’ when Obama won ‘ i was screaming… There was such a pride. A friend of mine said we were living in Martin Luther King dream and i was amazed by those words. Its true…we all need to be really proud of ourselves’.

You all remember Alicia’s debut movie Smokin Aces where she played a badass assassin, well according to the director and writer Joe Carnahan Universal Studios just approved the prequel for the movie and rumours have it that the prequel will concentrate on either Common’s character as Sir Ivey or Alicia keys who was Georgia Sykes.

The fifth annual black ball a benefit for children and families in Africa with HIV/AIDS, will be held at The Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City at 6PM on Thursday November 13th.
