Alicia Keys has just joined the financial bandwagon for this weekend’s upcoming first Hip-Hop Summit on Financial Empowerment in New York City. Taking place at the famed Hammerstein Ballroom, Saturday, April 22, the event will feature Keys along with other music celebrities such as LL Cool J, Nas, Russell Simmons, T.I., Fabolous, and is part of the official “Get Your Money Right” National Tour. Now in its second year, the tour brings together popular celebrities and financial whizzes who break down the money facts for 18-35 year olds and talk about the importance of financial knowledge. Vital topics like home ownership, building credit, credit scores, and owning your own business are covered on the tour which will hit five additional cities, including Miami (May 20), Atlanta (September 16), Los Angeles (September 30) and Dallas (October 14). The Hip-Hop Summit on Financial Empowerment is part of the Hip-hop Summit Action Network (HSAN) efforts to educate youth for financial success. According to a statement, recent survey results released in a news conference in the Federal Reserve boardroom showed U.S. teenagers lack the fundamentals of personal financial knowledge. Also, according to Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy, results of a survey taken by 5,775 high school seniors in 37 states, shows financial literacy is still a significant area for improvement with youth. Money is kind of the trick thing in life: “here one day gone the next”, so we all hope that Alicia sticks to the things she loves, although money will surely have its hand in that.

How is this idea being worked out in a practical manner?
Are there any partnerships with social service agencies?
Has a program been developed for implementation?

…and then you can always remember the old tune, “with money, you’ve got lots of friends crowding around you door, and when it’s gone and spending ends, no they don’t come ’round no more, Papa may have, Momma may have, but God bless the child that’s got its own.”
That’s you Lici.
