Hollywood Stardom Beckons From The Pages Of ‘The Nanny Diaries’

Friday, June 30th, 2006

alicia.jpgWhile it sometimes feels like Alicia Keys has been around forever (in a good way), it’s actually been a mere five years since Songs in A Minor announced to the world the arrival of a monumental talent. Platinum albums and multiple Grammys later, she now has her sights set on Hollywood. MTV News’ SuChin Pak spoke with Ms. Keys about her upcoming film with Scarlett Johansson, “The Nanny Diaries,” her strengths and insecurities and how Barbra Streisand is something of a role model.

SuChin Pak: Give us an idea of what “The Nanny Diaries” is all about.

Alicia Keys: Basically it’s about this girl, played by Scarlett Johansson, who’s graduating from college and her mother has been pushing her to pursue a career in finance. But she really loves anthropology, and during an interview for a high-finance job she kind of freaks out and runs out of the place. She ends up as a nanny for a very wealthy family in Manhattan.

The whole movie is based on all of these stereotypes and the way you can get caught up in trying to find out who you are and what’s good for you, and fighting the chains that kind of get wrapped around you. But it’s told with so much wit. It’s so funny, and a great film. And my role in it all is that I support Scarlett’s character through the whole film and try to talk sense to the woman, because she’s lost her mind. I’m like, “What’s wrong with you?”

Pak: So you are the voice of reason.

Keys: Technically, I am the voice of reason.

Pak: This theme of graduating and leaving the nest, leaving safety and going into the world and being really lost — this is what it’s about, right? A girl trying to find her way.

Singer Alicia Keys Pours Heart into AIDS Fight in Africa

Monday, June 5th, 2006

Alicia Keys did not have to come here, to this small town outside of Durban on South Africa’s eastern coast, where the infection rate from HIV/AIDS is believed to be twice the national average: 40 percent of the people in this part of the country are infected.

But for the Grammy winning singer and songwriter, the opportunity to come here and help build a clinic was reason enough to cross the ocean and confront a seemingly insurmountable challenge. She came, she says, “To be the voice of the people. To represent real people and real life, real struggles, real pains, real joys, real things that are really there, you know?

Alicia Keys donates dress to school girl

Monday, June 5th, 2006

Alicia Keys has donated a designer dress to a high school girl to wear at her prom night, after the youngster won an essay contest.

The singer has given away a blue Tracy Reese dress that she wore to the Naacp Image awards to 18-year-old Maloune Samuel.

“It’s a dream come true. I feel like a princess. I want Alicia to know how amazing this was for me,” said Samuel.

Keys works with Operation Fairy Dust, a non-profit organisation that collects previously worn dresses and gives them to disadvantaged girls.

Alicia Keys Preps New Movie, Ready to Record

Monday, June 5th, 2006

Alicia Keys is hitting the big screen. Oddly enough, one of R&B’s biggest sensations isn’t taking her most known attraction to film.

Her first appearence on-screen will be alongside Ben Affleck in Smokin’ Aces and fans want to know: Why doesn’t she have a song on the soundtrack?
Her next movie, The Nanny Diaries most likely won’t feature Keys on the soundtrack either. Is she giving up singing? Not quite.
“I think later on I’ll try getting into acting as well as doing the entire soundtrack. But right now I want to focus directly on the acting,” she says.

Fans of her music should not fear as Keys promises a new album with new preparation. This time, expect 100 percent of Alicia Keys.
“I’m in the studio now,” she told MTV. “I’m actually taking a different approach for this album. I’m taking the approach of writing everything first, kind of old-school style. Before cats stepped in the studio, the song was written, the music was done — that kind of thing. The idea of it was already developed. I want to do that,” she added.

Later, the singer/actress explained that she hoped to work with a wide variety of artists including John Mayer, Linda Perry and John Legend.
Although it may take awhile to hear her new music, fans can still catch her at the movies.

Look for Smokin’ Aces soon.

Alicia Keys Won’t Mix Music and Movies

Monday, June 5th, 2006

Alicia Keys is currently filming The Nanny Diaries here in New York City with Ben Affleck and Scarlett Johansson. Apparently she’s taking the whole acting thing pretty seriously.

When asked if she’d be contributing music to Diaries, Alicia had this to tell

“Probably not,” Keys replied. “You never know, but even with the other movie, it wasn’t about doing the music for the movie. I think later on I’ll try getting into acting as well as doing the entire soundtrack. But right now I want to focus directly on the acting.”
Alicia however is in the studio and says she wants to work with John Mayer (who is a major D’angelo fan).

“I love his writing style. He’s funny, very witty,” Keys said of Mayer. “I think we’ll do some writing together. Linda Perry, our styles combining would be very interesting — a soulful Rock/Blues thing. John Legend would be an interesting collaboration. We were on tour together but we never sat down and vibed and wrote. I want to do some interesting collaborations, things that are different, and see where it leads.”
